Design Studio II

Syllabus

  1. Introduction to Design Standards (6 hours)
    1. Measurement of human figures and their movements in spaces
    2. Anthropometric data collection methods
    3. Application of anthropometric data with function and space in design
    4. Case studies and real-world examples
  2. Visual Perception and Form Transformations (10 hours)
    1. Analysis of the key characteristics of natural objects and understanding visual perception
    2. Transformation of original forms into abstract or architectural elements through dimensional alterations, addition, subtraction, and interplay between mass and void
    3. Development of architectural forms and compositions maintaining the integrity of original characteristics
    4. Analysis of human scale and proportion with architectural elements and in relation with culture and social aspects
    5. Creation of 3D models based on transformed forms
  3. Research and Design of Building Programs, Architectural Spaces and Compositions (14 hours)
    1. Site, building programs and design principles of architects (literature and interview based studies)
    2. Analysis of existing architectural spaces and compositions (case study)
    3. Different design concepts and spatial arrangements (experiments)

Practicals

One hundred twenty hours of studio work: study of a project from site, building, architect and client perspectives; making a model of the project; project design following the design process (bubble diagram, schematic layout, zoning, concept) for functions such as residences, restaurants, workshops, filling stations, show rooms and book shops; individual studies on anthropometric data for human proportion and activity (international and Nepali standards); creation of space standards as modules (toilets, kitchen, classroom, office, parking, ramp); interior-based projects; exercises on natural object abstraction; and development of a program for a designer project with anthropometric data collection and bubble diagrams.
